FROM VERONA A "VA PENSIERO" TO AFRICA

Verona, 20 August 1985

The "Live Aid" of the opera, a marathon dedicated to Africa, closed on Sunday at Arena towards 2am, after four and a half hours of uninterrupted show. The final part was sealed by applause and ovation while the choir of twenty four best voices of the world sang "Va pensiero" from Nabucco, accompanied by the Katowice orchestra under Carlo Franci, with all public (over twelve thousand people) repeating the words.

All world television networks shot the evening (the Rai will soon broadcast it and also release a video for sale): the American CBS, TV channels from Austria, Germany, USA and Britain. The television fees and box-office takings will make a considerable contribution to an Austrian charity foundation that helps African people.

In spite of last moment refusals, most beautiful voices of the world opera, "the biggest stars", remained. This was how actor Christopher Lee, who took off his Dracula clothes, defined them. He presented the singers together with Fabio Testi, actor from Verona, after the "forfeit" of Burt Lancaster.

The inspirer of the show was Josй Carreras (one of the main performers of the evening together with Montserrat Caballй and Bruson), who sacrificed his own prestige to bring great stars to Verona for a benefit concert. He wanted everything to go perfectly on the Verona-Salzburg axis, just like during the Live Aid of rock between London and New York. Like many stars flying from one concert to another on a Concorde, Kurt Rydl sang in I Vespri Siciliani in Verona right after he had performed in Ulisse's Return in Salzburg. He arrived by the beginning of the final part, after a forty-minute flight.

The marathon began at 9pm, with the performance of the Orchestra Rai of Turin under Carlo Franci, after three days of exhausting rehearsals (twelve hours a day). Financial motives accounted for the choice of pieces in the program; the public was other than the traditional of the Verona. Giuseppe Di Stefano, who failed to sing in Verona two years ago, opened the evening with "I te vurria vasб"; in the final Carreras sang "Core 'ngrato" on a highest level. German Udo Jurgens sang a couple of songs in his native language. Later he accompanied Carreras on the piano in Tonight, from "West Side Story", a tribute to the public all over the world watching the show on TV or video. They also pleased those who love Neapolitan songs (first of all USA Italians).

Juan Pons and Agnes Baltsa added more German music. Andrew Lloyd Webber put a British touch to the evening. He conducted the Orchestra of Katowice in his own Requiem. And again Rosalind Plowright, Zancanaro, Giaiotti, Troitskaja, Boesch, Weissnberg at the piano.

Certainly Arena was not as packed as it will presumably be during the performance on Friday, the 23, when Pavarotti and Cappuccilli will sing. The two and Anne Sophie Mutter were absent the other night.

Ovation followed every performance of the four and a half hours of music. Prolonged applause received Hellen Donath who sang Mozart, as well as Ghazarian and Milnes. One must commend the Plowright- Bruson duet in Trovatore, and the choir of singers who substituted the choir of children in Webber's Requiem, as well as personal success of Margareth Jones in an excerpt from Turandot and the magic Memory.

The public accompanied the duet Montserrat Caballй - Josй Carreras in Brindisi from La Traviata. Caballй sang her memorable Casta Diva from Norma, a consuming commemoration of an unforgettable performance. Finally there was Bruson and his Macbeth. First of all the evening was remarkable for its great final. The moved public stood up to sing "Va pensiero". The concert was conceived to raise money for humanitarian purposes, but Arena also proved its incomparable fascination again.

Il "Live Aid" della lirica, una maratona benefica dedicata all'Africa, si и chiusa in Arena domenica notte verso le due, dopo quattro ore e mezzo di spettacolo ininterrotto: ne hanno siglato la fine, fra applausi ed ovazioni, ventiquattro tra le migliori voci liriche del mondo, intonando in coro il "Va pensiero" dal Nabucco, accompagnate dall'orchestra di Katovice diretta da Carlo Franci, mentre tutto il pubblico (piщ di dodicimila persone) sussurrava le parole.

La serata и stata ripresa da reti televisive di tutto il mondo: la Rai la manderа prossimamente in onda e metterа anche in vendita la videocassetta ; c'erano l'americana Cbs, altre troupes televisive austriache, tedesche, statunitensi e inglesi : con i diritti televisivi e con l'incasso della serata, si potrа dare un contributo non indifferente ad un fondo austriaco destinato a soccorrere le popolazioni africane.

Nonostante le defezioni dell'ultimo momento, rimanevano ospiti le piщ belle voci della lirica mondiale, "the biggest stars" come le ha definite l'attore Christopher Lee che , smessi i panni di Dracula, ha presentato i cantanti assieme con l'attore veronese Fabio Testi, dopo il "forfait" di Burt Lancaster.

La manifestazione era nata per l'iniziativa di Josй Carreras (uno dei principali interpreti della serata con Montserrat Caballи e Bruson) che ha messo in gioco il proprio prestigio per riuscire a portare gratuitamente a Verona grandi stelle ed ha voluto che tutto si svolgesse idealmente sull'asse Verona-Salisburgo, proprio come il "Live Aid" del rock si era svolto tra Londra e New York; e proprio come molte "star" fecero in quell'occasione, spostandosi da un concerto all'altro con il Concorde, anche a Verona il cantante Kurt Rydl si и esibito nei Vespri Siciliani due ore dopo aver cantato nel Ritorno di Ulissse a Salisburgo.; и arrivato con un volo durato quaranta minuti, in tempo per la parte finale.

La maratona era cominciata alle 21, con l'orchestra della Rai di Torino, diretta da Carlo Franci reduce da tre estenuanti giornate di prove (dodici ore per ogni giorno) . Il programma ha certamente obbedito anche a motivi di incassi , e anche il pubblico era diverso da quello tradizionale del teatro veronese. Giuseppe Di Stefano, mancato due anni fa all'appuntamento con Verona, ha aperto la serata con I te vurria vasа, mentre nel finale Carreras ha interpretato ad altissimo livello Core n'grato. In mezzo il tedesco Udo Jurgens ha eseguito nella propria lingua un paio di canzoni, e ha poi accompagnato al pianoforte Carreras in Tonight, da West Side Story, un tributo al pubblico di tutto il mondo che seguirа la serata attraverso le TV o le videocassette, ma pure un occhio attendo a quanti, soprattutto italo-americani in Usa, amano la canzone napoletana.

Juan Pons e Agnes Baltsa hanno rafforzato il ponte con la musica tedesca , e a dare un tocco inglese и arrivato Andrew Lloyd Webber, che ha diretto l'orchestra di Katowice nell'esecuzione del proprio Requiem . E ancora Rosalind Plowright, Zancanaro, Giaiotti, Troitskaja, Boesch, Weissnberg al pianoforte.

Certo l'Arena non era strapiena come lo sarа presumibilmente venerdм 23 per l'esibizione in concerto di Pavarotti e Cappuccilli and company. I due non erano presenti l'altra sera, come la violinista Anne Sophie Mutter.

Ovazioni hanno comunque accompagnato ogni performance nelle quattro ore e mezzo di musica. Grandi applausi sono andati ad Hellen Donath, impegnata in Mozart, alla Ghazarian, a Milness. Da sottolineare il duetto Plowright-Bruson nel Trovatore e il coro dei cantanti che hanno accettato di sostituire un coro di bambini per accompagnare Webber nel Requiem; infine il successo personale di Margareth Jones in un brano della Turandot e in un magico Memory.

Il pubblico ha accompagnato il duetto Montserrat Caballй-Josй Carreras nel brindisi della Traviata, la Caballй ha cantato la sua memorabile Casta Diva dalla Norma, struggente rievocazione di mai dimenticate performances. Infine Bruson e il suo Macbeth, ma soprattutto la serata rimarrа memorabile per il gran finale. Gente commossa , in piedi, a sussurrare il "Va pensiero". Sarа anche stata una serata per incassi a fini umanitari, ma ancora una volta l'Arena ha confermato il suo ineguagliabile fascino.
