The Spanish tenor affirms that he resorts to home remedies when he has a sore throat

"No Creole songs are planned"

Jose Carreras says that if he had to name a soprano he would choose Montserrat Caballe.

At four p.m. the telephone rings and a clear voice with a marked Spanish accent is heard. It is Jose Carreras, Spanish tenor, who tomorrow will give a gala concert at the Teatro Nacional. He cannot receive anyone, he says, because he is rehearsing, but in an hour there will be an interview.

"Well, you can wait till five thirty when I finish, and I will receive you," he says amiably. Some time after five thirty the figure of the tenor appears, two men accompany him, one of them obviously his guard. With a smile on his face he says resolutely: "Only three minutes". He is wearing brown suede shoes, black pants, white shirt, black jacket, blue scarf around his neck, and courtesy of a total caballero.

Q: There are many unknown Creole songs you will sing on Sunday. Does Jose Carreras sing a merengue at the stage?

A: Till now I did not sing any Dominican songs. But many things can happen during these days...

Q: Have you considered a possibility to extend the Jose Carreras Foundation's activity to Latin America?

A: We intend to collaborate with all countries that need our help. Our goal is to put necessary information at the disposal of those who ask for it, share our knowledge with them. On our part, we are planning to work with many Latin American and Central American institutions.

Q: What does Jose Carreras do when he catches a cold and has a sore throat? Resorts to grandma's remedies, like honey with lemon, for example?

A: I will tell you a secret, just you. Take a linen handkerchief soaked in olive oil, put it around your neck, cover with a silk scarf, and sleep the whole night in it. The next day you will smell like a mixed salad, but your voice will be perfect.

Q: What do you think about the phenomenon of the "Triumph Operation", which is now taking place in the Dominican Republic?

A: Well, I have two considerations. First, I am always out of Spain, and it is difficult for me to follow current events there, unfortunately. On the other side I have to say that everything that gives young people an opportunity to appear in front of the public and realize their dreams at least partially, I consider very positive. Although I know very little about the "Triumph Operation" and all those young people, I think it is very good that such things take place. Many Spanish musicians now complain that only the youth from "Triumph Operation" appear in the summer galas. There is obviously a new generation of young artists, who became very popular thanks to television programs and disks they sell. Is this going to affect artists who had been working for a long time? Maybe, I don't know, but it is an open market. All of this has the right to exist. He who has abilities remains, and he who doesn't, comes to nothing.

Q: What do you think about Francisco Casanova, the Dominican tenor coming from New York? Have you worked with him?

A: No. Till now I did not have an opportunity to work with him or even listen to him in person, but I was told many good things about his voice and his personality.

Q: Which soprano did you like to work with most of all?

A: I've been fortunate to work with all great sopranos of my generation and of the preceding generation. Since I was always told "not to argue with a soprano", I will not mention any of them. But if I still had to do it, I would surely name Montserrat Caballe.

El tenor espaсol afirma que acude a remedios caseros cuando se enferma de la garganta

"No he previsto temas criollos"

Josй Carreras dice que si tuviera que nombrar a una soprano elegirнa a Monserrat Caballй Alas cuatro de la tarde el telйfono timbra y una voz precisa con marcado acento espaсol responde. Es Josй Carreras, el tenor espaсol, que presenta maсana en el Teatro Nacional su concierto de gala. Dice que no puede recibir a nadie, que se encuentra en los ensayos y una hora despuйs le aguarda una entrevista.

"Bueno, si puede esperar a las cinco y treinta cuando yo termine de todo esto, le atiendo", dice con tono amable. Tiempo despuйs de las cinco y treinta aparece la figura del tenor, acompaсado de dos caballeros, uno de ello, evidentemente, de su seguridad. Con rostro sonriente saluda y dice muy decidido"sуlo tres minutos". Llevaba zapatos marrones de gamuza, pantalуn negro, camisa blanca, chaqueta negra y bufanda azul alrededor del cuello y la gentileza de todo un caballero.

Hay muchas incуgnitas sobre las canciones criollas que usted interpretarб el domingo. їCantarб Josй Carreras un merengue en escena? Hasta ahora no hay ninguna canciуn dominicana. Aunque en estos dнas pueden pasar muchas cosas...

Le voy a decir un secreto, sуlo a usted. Se toma un paсuelo de lino con aceite de oliva, lo coloca en la garganta, sujйtelo con un paсo de seda y duerma toda la noche con йl. Al dнa siguiente huele usted como una ensalada mixta pero la voz estб perfecta.

їQuй le ha parecido el fenуmeno "Operaciуn Triunfo" que ahora se estб emitiendo en Repъblica Dominicana? Bueno, dos consideraciones. La primera es que siempre estoy fuera de Espaсa y me es muy dificil seguir los acontecimientos cotidianos allб, desgraciadamente. Por otra parte, tengo que decir que todo lo que sea para brindar posibilidades a los jуvenes, que puedan presentarse ante un pъblico, que sus aspiraciones y sus sueсos se realicen al menos en parte me parece muy positivo. Aunque yo conozco poco todo lo entramado de "Operaciуn Triunfo" y de todos esos chicos, veo muy positivo que estas cosas acontezcan. Muchos mъsicos espaсoles se quejan ahora de que sуlo hay espacio para los chicos de "Operaciуn Triunfo" en las galas de verano. Evidentemente hay una nueva jornada de artistas jуvenes, muy populares gracias a este programa de televisiуn y todos los discos que han vendido. їVa a afectar esto a todos los artistas que durante tantos aсos han participado?, pues asн, no lo sй, pero ciertamente es un mercado abierto. Por lo tanto todo el mundo tiene el derecho. El que tiene realmente calidad continъa a travйs de los aсos y el que no, se queda en el camino.

їQuй le parece Francisco Casanova, el tenor dominicano que estб radicado en Nueva York? їHa trabajado con el? No. Hasta el momento no he tenido la oportunidad de trabajar con йl ni de oнrle personalmente pero me han hablado muy bien de su voz y de su persona.

їCuбl es la soprano con la que mбs le ha gustado trabajar? He tenido la suerte de trabajar con todas las sopranos importantes de mi generaciуn y de la anterior Y como a mн me dijeron siempre "never argue with a soprano" o sea, que no discutiera nunca con una soprano, por lo tanto, no voy a mencionar una en particular. Aunque, si tuviera que hacerlo, sin duda nombrarнa a Monserrat Caballй.
